Orcas Island Airport
My name is Paul Vierthaler and I live in Northwest Washington. I have a hangar home on private property abutting a FAA funded airport in the San Juan Islands (KORS) along with 28 other hangar and hangar home properties. We have been fighting this problem with the Port of Orcas and the FAA (which in my opinion is now blackmailing our Port) on the through the fence issue. We have deeded access to the Port of Orcas and the FAA is holding our Port in non-compliance until the Port charges us a fee to take off and land on a public airport.
We pay higher taxes on our property because we have access to the airport. Most of the property owners over the years have volunteered their time and money and a few even donated land to support the Port of Orcas. I live for airplane noise and my house looks right down the runway, I also called 911 just the other night (11/9/2009) because I saw someone casing some hangars (we did have a plane that was stolen from a hangar a few months back).
So lets just re-cap for a minute, hangar home owners love airplanes and airplane noise, hangar homes generate higher taxes because of the access, and hangar homes are a great way to help with security around airports.
I truly believe that hangars and hangar home are a great asset to public airports and that we do pay our fair share.
